PADL-UK

*PROJECT UPDATE – January 2026*
The PADL-UK project has made excellent progress since our last update, and we would like to thank everyone who contributed.
Survey completion and response
The PADL-UK scoping survey is now closed. We received a fantastic response from 88% of all NHS acute trusts across the UK, demonstrating widespread interest and engagement in penicillin allergy de-labelling by non-specialists. In addition, we have collected local guidelines from 28 different trusts, which we are including in a write up of our survey. An abstract has been submitted to ESCMID, and we aim to write up the findings in full to give an overview of current practices across the UK. We had previously planned an audit of non-specialist PADL practices and associated outcomes; however, this work will be deferred in light of anticipated changes to the PADL landscape over the coming year.

As a reminder:
PADL-UK is aiming to understand the work being done around the UK on Penicillin Allergy De-Labelling by non-specialists (i.e clinicians who aren’t allergists or immunologists). We would like to understand which trusts are currently undertaking this type of penicillin allergy de-labelling, whether they are using specific guidelines and what the current scope of practice is.
By ‘penicillin allergy de-labelling’, we are referring to the process by which penicillin allergy labels are removed from patient records. Non-specialists can do this by either taking a history and discussing this with the patient, or by giving the patient an oral penicillin and monitoring them for a specified period to see whether they have a reaction (also known as ‘DPT’ – drug provocation test).
