PADL-UK

*PROJECT UPDATE September 2025*

Ongoing data collection from survey with >70% UK Trusts recruited! Collected guidelines from 12 sites too. Collaboration started with Prof. Howard & NHSE AMS branch. Plans to publish a poster based on survey results at ESCMID and then a national audit based on best practice.

PADL-UK is seeking responses to our survey aiming to understand the work being done around the UK on Penicillin Allergy De-Labelling by non-specialists (i.e clinicians who aren’t allergists or immunologists). We would like to understand which trusts are currently undertaking this type of penicillin allergy de-labelling, whether they are using specific guidelines and what the current scope of practice is. We would also like to look at whether a national audit of penicillin allergy de-labelling would currently be possible and what outcomes could be reviewed.

By ‘penicillin allergy de-labelling’, we are referring to the process by which penicillin allergy labels are removed from patient records. Non-specialists can do this by either taking a history and discussing this with the patient, or by giving the patient an oral penicillin and monitoring them for a specified period to see whether they have a reaction (also known as ‘DPT’ – drug provocation test).

We would like to identify infection trainees and other interested colleagues in all trusts to help us with this work. This initial survey will help inform our further work. People involved in a potential future survey and audit would be recognised in any published work.

Please forward this survey to other colleagues in your Trust if you think they will be more up-to-date with information related to penicillin allergy de-labelling in your trust, but please also fill it in yourself.

Our survey will open on 19/5/25 and can be completed here: PADL-UK Scoping Survey
