*PROJECT UPDATE September 2025*

Had 50 responses across the UK and hoping to start Delphi next year.

More information about the project can be found below.

Background

Neuro-SSCCAR is a national initiative focused on developing expert consensus statements for the antimicrobial management of deep cranial and spinal surgical site infections (SSIs) in the UK. These infections are often complex, requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment and can lead to serious, life-altering complications.

What are we doing?

The first phase of the project involves a national survey of infection specialists to explore current diagnostic and treatment practices. The goal is to identify both established areas of consensus and those where further evidence is needed to guide clinical decision-making.

Following this, we will convene a multidisciplinary expert panel, including surgical and infection specialists, to develop consensus-based recommendations through a structured Delphi process.

Who can participate?

We invite infection trainees, associate specialists, clinical scientists, and consultants to participate in the initial survey. Our aim is to engage all major neurosurgical and spinal centres across the UK to gain a comprehensive view of national practice.

The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal, and contributors may have the opportunity to be involved in authorship of future publications.
